How do I check power outages in my area? ›

A damaged circuit breaker is one of the notorious causes of a partial power outage in many homes. The damage is commonplace during an overloaded electrical circuit or a short-circuiting from a faulty appliance or wiring. Diagnosing the problem isn't difficult since a blown fuse or a discolored switch is enough clue.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

To shower when the power is out, your home needs a traditional tank-style water heater. If that water heater still has hot water in reserve, then you can take a warm shower. If you plan to take a shower, you need to do it soon after the power goes out.

Utility service disconnection can be scheduled in vacant units when human health or property is not threatened. Utility service disconnection also may occur when customers fail to pay their energy bills or fail to make payment arrangements.
