My attempt

Well, I've made a start Scalescenes Canal Wharf Boxfile Layout (3)

Had to boot the laptop into Windows to get Adobe reader working and load the print drivers for the printer.

I normally use Linux, but Adobe decided some years ago to stop publishing Adobe Reader for Linux, and knowing how precise these kits are, I didn't want to use the Linux Adobe Reader look alike clone versions as the dimensions may well have been out.

The document spring and clasp were held in by why looked like some sort of rivets, and I had to resort to drilling them out.

When I removed the front, each side had what I can only describe as posts which came away as well.

This left the base about 5mm proud of the sides.

Looking at John's instructions they should be flush, so it was either a case of trimming the base or sticking the 'posts' back on the sides (obviously box files are made different in Oz Scalescenes Canal Wharf Boxfile Layout (5))

I decided to glue the 'posts' back to the end of the sides………….

……. of course I could only find one. The other is in the garage somewhere but I've even looked through the rubbish sack and I can't find it.

Ended up cutting a strip from the section cut out for the access on the right hand side. (above pic).

Needs a tidy up, bit of sanding etc, then the next job is print and fit the water surface to the front of the boxfile.

Good start Ed…..despite the missing corner…..I thought it was just me that lost stuff like that within minutes.
I am intrigued to see what the “water” looks like. Are you spraying the sheets as they come off the printer?

Cheers

I normally spray everything once it's finished John, but I'm playing by ear so we'll see how it goes.

The only thing I've printed so far is the template to cut the access hole in the box file.

I'm sure when reading through the 22 pages of instructions the other day it mentioned varnish for the water

Not sure who it was now but when I first started with Scalescenes I was advised to spray each sheet as it came off the printer…….and I have followed this advice ever since.
Its worth thinking about……the spray offers a degree of protection from handling both during cutting out and assembly….also aids removal of excess glue…….just a thought.

Cheers

I have learned to my cost…. and repeatedly… it is best to spray as you go. Just be sure to let the ink dry first (guess how I know this!) Likewise, I'm delighted that it isn't just me that loses things instantly either. It's worse when I put things in a safe place and then can't remember where the safe place was!
I have never attempted one of the boxfile kits, although I have been tempted, so I am following with interest.

No idea Peter, the garden is my sister's department.

I only took the boxfile out in the garden as there was not enough light for a decent picture indoors.

Well, absolutly nothing done on this apart from printing the water that goes right at the front.

I've had chronic hayfever all summer, followed by a chest infection and now I've recovering from some sort of stomach bug.

Not a great summer, even without the current pandemic threat.

Doubly annoying, as I treated myself to a Macbook to print out the kit, amongst other things.

The Acer Aspire I bought just over a year ago was gettting slower and slower in Windows 10 even though it has 8Gb of memory, the last Windows 10 update taking some four hours.

Although I had Linux (Ubuntu Mate) installed as well, Adobe stopped produng a version of their Reader for Linux some years ago, so you have to use a third party PDF viewer.

Also the Linux print drivers being generic, print out the Scalescenes kits the wrong size and colour (guess how I know).

All being well, hopefully in the next week or so I'll get going again.

Hi and what a rotten summer you've had to endure Ed. So sorry you've had to suffer so much, but thankfully it seems to be almost over now.

Good luck for the remainder of your recovery and some modelling can only help improve your outlook of life, the universe and everything.

I'm really looking forward to your Scalescenes box file build and I even bought a can of not too smelly hair spray this week to protect some Scalescenes sheets.

Best,

Bill

Thanks Bill.

Not tried hairspray.

I bought Humbrol Acryic Spray, but it's not cheap.

I have bought cheap general prurpose spray matt varnish from fleabay in the past.

Although it works ok, if you spray too much on it can bleach the paper.

Hence buying Humbrol this time round.

Begs the question, what does everybody else use.

Krylon matt acrylic spray. I also use it for home-made decals/transfers.

May I join Bill in sending my very best wishes for a speedy recovery Ed.
